First-Line Friday: The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder – The Frontier Landscapes that Inspired The Little House Books

Hello, friends! ๐
It’s another FLF here ~ and I get to feature another received-for-Christmas book! ๐ If you love The Little House book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this is a beautiful companion book – a kind of herbal/floral history of the plants and landscapes featured in the series and in her letters. It bases its premise on the books growing out of the environment of its author. Rich in illustrations, maps, and photos, this thick book has delighted me in recent evenings after my own writing is done and has made me think about how natural environments shape other writers’ books, too.

The Book:
The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder – The Frontier Landscapes that Inspired The Little House Books
by Marta McDowell
First Line:
“Once upon a time.” Like many children’s stories, Laura Ingalls Wilder openedย Little House in the Big Woods with this quiet invitation to readers to turn their thoughts back in time. Hers was a long story, rooted in with her father’s and her husband’s, tales of family and farms and nature – a nature that was sometimes inviting and sometimes ferocious. It began in Wisconsin.

Your turn! What are you reading this week, friends?
Grace and peace,
Alicia Ruggieri

Happy Friday!
Over on my blog I am showcasing Naomi Rawlings’s novel Love’s Bright Tomorrow. Here I will share the first line from the novel I am currently reading, Mary and Bright by Shannon Graupman.
“Mary Bradford’s heart raced as she sat on the edge of her king sized bed — her gaze affixed on the single white sheet of paper resting on the nightstand.”
Heather Snyder
This sounds like a wonderful book! I loved the books and the television series for Little House. ๐ Happy Friday!

An old favorite. It is too bad we forget these BOOKS and authors. I am featuring one of Margaret Coel books about the Arapahoe indians.

Yes, this one brought back great memories for me of reading the Little House books as a child. ๐
Anneliese
The first line on my blog is from a novel by Michelle Griep, The Captive Heart. Here, I will share the first line of Chapter 5 from the book I’m currently reading, The Captivating Lady Charlotte by Carolyn Miller “It was entirely possible that the excitement of last month’s come-out ball was about to be surpassed.”
Have a wonderful weekend!

Sounds like a good one – I’m guessing it’s a regency. ๐ You, too, Anneliese!

Happy Friday! (What’s left!) My first lines (sorry, but I included the 2nd) is from These Healing Hills by Ann H. Gabhart:
“Francine Howard stepped off the bus into another world. She should have been prepared.”

That’s one on my TBR list ~ It looks so good! ๐

How cool! I haven’t read all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, but I’ve read most of Janette Oke’s, and I always imagined them to have much the same setting.
I’m sharing the first line from Aint Misbehaving by Marji Laine on my blog. I’m currently reading My Sister’s Prayer by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould. It’s the middle book in a trilogy and I really shouldn’t have read the third book first, because it did ruin some of the big-picture suspense. Here’s the first line:
The cry for help came as I was coasting toward the bicycle rack at the far end of the story.

The settings do remind you of each other ~ Laura’s have a more child-like, simple quality to the writing that draws me back over and over, but I love Janette Oke’s more spiritual emphasis!
Argh ~ I hate it when that happens with a series. I hope you still enjoy the first two anyway! ๐

I have added this one to my TBR! I really liked McDowell’s book a couple years ago called “All the Presidents’ Gardens”, about how different presidents and their families change and added on to the White House gardens. I will definitely be looking for this one. Happy Saturday!

That book about the presidents’ gardens sounds so neat, Sarah! I’m going to have to check it out. ๐
Carrie @ Reading Is My SuperPower
oh cool! I would love that book!
My current first line is from Cathy Gohlke’s Until We Find Home: “Lightning crackled, splitting the night sky over Paris, illuminating letters painted on the bookstore window across the street: La Maison des Amis des Livres.”

It’s brought back some great childhood reading memories ~ I think I will have to revisit the books soon. ๐ Thanks for stopping by, Carrie!
